How I Draw My Horses
Ok, this is a look inside how I get the horse drawn for stained glass, but it may not be a pretty sight! I'm a messy drawer on the computer. I use the Freehand Select a lot to select whole sections and delete them. The worst part of drawing a horse for me is the rear section. So that is where you will see the most changes going on. I think I'll start with a simple horse head first. Oh no! The Godfather!
Normally I would be using a size 1 brush to make a drawing ready for stained glass, but so you can see the lines clearly, I will use a size 3 here. Open a new transparent image, 500x500. Flood fill it with white. I know, you could have just started with a white 500x500 image, but I like to be in the habit of creating a new transparent image. This will be the background layer. Add a new layer to draw on, layer 2. Use a bright color that is easy to see, like the purple below. Unless you are drawing straight lines, use the Freehand Line on the Draw tool. For the basic start of the horse head, you need to draw 3 separate lines. The first one, number 1, start about 2/3 of the way up, about halfway across and draw down. You will curve out slightly and then curve in before heading back out with line #1. For line #2, start somewhere near the end of line #1. Draw towards the right at an angle as shown below. For line #3, start where line #2 ended and draw up. Curve in gently and end it about 2/3 of the way up.

Next, add a partial circle where the #3 line ended as shown below. Next add a slightly curving line beginning below line #1. See how the beginning of that curve is below and slightly right of the end of line #1? Now connect the last two lines you drew by sort of making a lopsided U. There you go, you have the head part!

Put in the closest ear first, as shown below. Now when I added the second ear on to the end of line #1, I realized the line for the head was too high. See the line that is curving through the front ear? I connected it in a curve to the neck. Then I used the Freehand Select to remove the wrong part of the too high neck. Finally, I redrew ear 2 so it sat on top of the neck line, next to and smaller than the front ear. Oh.......and I added an eye. I made that with 2 draw strokes. First I made the slightly curved top part of the eye, then I made the bottom, more curved part of the eye which is the bottom. For the nose, I started with a line below the eye and curled it around as I ended it to make the nose.

Now I start adding finishing touches. I put a line down the front ear, curving it slightly. For making the mane, do each one in 2 strokes. Put the point of the draw tool down on the neck. Draw towards the left, dip down and then up. Let go the draw tool. Now start where you ended, curve down, then out and then back in. The forelock, front mane piece, it's the same, just going the opposite direction.

And here is my basic horse head. It's not ready for stained glass yet, but that gets covered in another area of the making patterns tutorial. At least you have an idea how to draw a simple animal image! Be prepared to either undo or select and delete mistakes!
Are you ready to move on to the more difficult horse? The full body horse!
