I'm going to use three of the rock patterns for this next part.
Fig.18
Use Effects/Artistic/Enamel on each of them. Preset Custom 6.
Fig.19
They now look like this.
Fig.20
Open a new transparent image, 400x400. Flood fill with the Transparent Sky gradient only.........no texture! Make sure that the foreground texture is set to Null. Activate one of your enameled rock images, goto Edit/Copy. Activate your sky image and paste it as a new layer. Adjust the opacity of the rock layer anywhere between 30% and 50%. The level of the opacity will affect how much detail you will have when smudging. Merge and flatten the image.

Click on the Retouch tool and choose Smudge. These are the settings I used. You can play with the settings for different looks. According to Laura, playing with the Density settings is really cool too!
Fig.23
What you end up with is very nice looking sky and ground. Which patterns you choose to Enamel, the Gradient you choose for the first layer, how much opacity you choose for the second layer and what settings you use for the smudge tool will all affect the final outcome of your image. I like this technique because I feel like I am actually painting on a canvas.

I have just one more thing to show you and then you can get to work on your image.
