Making a Transparent Mask 2

An additional step is to mask the edges.....

Do steps 1 through 3.  Once you get the edge/mask the correct size, go to
Colors>Negative Image and click.

Copy the mask.  Go to Edit, Paste.  Paste as a new layer
on the Picture/Image you are masking.
 Make sure the mask/edge is the top layer.

Select SCREEN or MULTIPLY as the blending mode.

I chose Screen for this one

 

 The final step is to apply the Gaussian Blur to the top layer (the mask)

  You can play with the numbers here make it very blurry or less so.

As you can see I used 2.


 

See?  It is really quite easy!
