The Retouch Tool 1

I wrote this section of the Palette last because it actually contains so many tools under one heading.

The Retouch tool actually contains a multitude of useful tools.  I'm not going to cover each one of them, but I will hit upon some of the more used ones.

To the right is the full drop-down menu of the features.  Several are related to what you would think of being under the Colors menu.  The difference here is that you can pinpoint exactly what spot you want to have this effect applied to.  It can be as small as 1 pixel or as large as 255 pixels.  Combined with Hardness, Opacity, Step and Density, you have a wide variety of options.

The Soften tool is one that I use all the time.  You can soften an entire image under the Effects menu, but what if you just want to soften one spot?  How about just the sky?  Then use the Soften tool under Retouch.  Shown below is a section I want to soften a little bit more than it already is.  Use a small brush size, 10 in this circumstance.  I often use a Size 5 brush for small areas.  Then adjust the Opacity.  I tend to keep my Soften tool set at 70 as my default and adjust from that number.

What you want to do with something like the one spot I wanted softened is to click and release, click and release.  Do not drag the mouse.  If you do, it will smear rather than soften.

But here is a case where I did want to drag the Soften brush.  I changed the brush size to 200 to soften the bulk of the sky without touching the mountains.  Then I used a much smaller brush size, 20, to soften the section of the sky around the mountain top.  Now you have to admit that the sky on the right looks much better!  I really  hate spotty jpgs!

Think of the Sharpen tool as being used much like you have seen with the Soften tool.
